Sugar Skulls
The Calavera comes from the Mexican tradition of creating decorative human skulls out of sugar for the Dia de Los Muertos holiday. These sugar skulls are intricate, well-crafted and playful. They make light of death while recognizing it's inevitability.
With that same spirit I want to depart from the highly artificial materials used in the traditional sugar skull and incorporate items found in nature. I have collected a number of large mammal skulls and have begun to adorn them in the sugar skull style with lichen, stones, moss and real flowers.
One of my partners on this project is Adrienne Moon, a highly creative craftswoman who has brought a unique approach to each iteration.
